We hiked over to walk down the trail and look at where we tried to take the 5th wheel and took a few pictures. You never know what’s going to happen, or what situation might unexpectedly occur.

  • Always fill your freshwater tank at least a third full so you have water.
  • If something crazy happens just stop, take a break, and walk around the area that you think you want to go, look at it, and if it feels wrong, don’t go.
  • Never turn somewhere when the road looks as small as the width of the truck with the light fading.

Utah is a great state, people are just as amazing as the views! Locals in Utah rock! Such awesome people, so kind and helpful.Everything seemed to be fine the stars were out, it was beautiful and the highway quieted down with less and less traffic, and we were all able to finally get some sleep after a long day.

Once we got across the street to the huge dirt lot we cleaned the dirt out of the generator exhaust, cleaned off the weeds, brush, and dirt. The furnace ran all night and the batteries held their charge. After some time no additional propane leaked and everything seemed to be fine. We needed the propane to run the furnace for the night since the low would reach 39 degrees. Once across the road I checked the rig over and realized one of the propane tanks was in the red and we freaked out that we ripped up a propane line or broke a regulator. We will forever be grateful for their help! The locals that helped us (angels sent by God?) disappeared down the road with a wave. After 5 mins or so we were able to get back out onto the road and then drive across the street to the huge hard-packed dirt lot where we camped for the night. He then continued to back up and blocked the entire highway for us so we could slowly reverse our rig and get back on the road! The problem was that the trail was so narrow, the truck’s front wheels would slam into the dirt banks and scrubby bushes each time we tried to maneuver. The window rolled down, “Oh, you don’t wanna go down there!” said the local who was driving. Then, out of nowhere, a white truck making its way down the highway stopped and backed up. It took all 475 HP to back out of the sand, and then we tried to back off the trail into Highway 89 to make our way across the street to a huge lot that looked available for camping.

The large turnaround area we had seen on Google satellite view was really only maybe 40 feet wide…we’d been tricked! Shem prayed while I ran ahead to see if we could turn around anywhere. Later we’d also find the generator exhaust pipe full of sand. We were shocked to realize we had turned onto a small trail, NOT a big road! It was a trail of soft sand and brush which the 5th wheel slammed into when we turn off the road! We looked back in the mirror and saw the three left tires were halfway sunk in sand. We arrived at the location and trusting the map, we turned off the highway. So we drove north out of town and to make our way to the campsite with Google maps guiding us. We checked on Google Earth and saw a large area where we could turn around if needed. So we quickly found a BLM (Bureau of Land Management) campsite on a camping app it was next to a river, had amazing reviews and looked beautiful. Nothing was available, but someone advised us to try boondocking (dry camping) just north of town. We had no reservations and no place to camp, so we furiously called around to try and find a site for the night. (Seems like maybe they knew we wouldn’t fit?)īy this time it was 7:15 PM and the sun would set in 45 mins. We went back to the office and told them we couldn’t fit, and they smiled and instantly gave us a full refund for the full 2 weeks. Our hearts sank as we realized it was MUCH too small for us to fit the 43-foot 5th wheel. We nervously maneuvered the rig into the back corner of the park where we found our site. We checked in at the office, so happy just to pull in for the night and rest. We finally arrived at the RV park where we had a site reserved for two weeks. After a long day of traveling from Williams, AZ to Kanab, UT, the family was tired and cranky.
